The Revealing Choices of Favorite Books

One of those revealing details in the story of a life can be what the narrator loved to read, particularly as a child or youth. Favorite books show where our imaginations take flight and what delights us.

Stories can help shape us as well. When I think back to the stories that my own sons read or wanted read to them, to those point of broken spines and slipping out pages, I can see in each story traits of these sons as adults, for example The Little Engine That Could with a son who has always tried exceptionally hard, and Kittens Are Like That with a cat-loving adult son.

One narrator included his favorite books in his life story, divided into childhood and older reading lists. Perhaps a grandchild will explore this forebear’s reading path. Or at the least they will learn more about his mind and interests.

Consider including a Favorite Books list in your life story, and enjoy rediscovering – perhaps rereading – favorite old friends.
